Is your A/C not cooling? Here are some tips for troubleshooting your A/C problem.
Is the thermostat working properly and calling for Cooling?
A/C not cooling? Make sure that the thermostat is set to COOL and at 2 degrees below the current room temperature. Check to be sure that the air filter is clean and free of obstructions.
Is there power to the unit?
A/C not cooling? Check the power supply, fuses, or breakers.
Turn the fan switch from “AUTO” to “ON” and check to see if the fan is running. Often you can hear it running. If the fan is running on a package unit, you should have power to the whole unit.
If the fan runs on a split system, then power is on to the air handler (indoor unit) , but possibly not to the condensing unit (outdoor unit).
Still not cooling?
Is the compressor and outdoor fan running?
Next check the drain overflow safety switch located in the drain line just outside the air handler. gently lift the switch up and out of the drain pipe and listen. If everything comes on, then you may have a clogged drain. Re-install the switch in its original spot. You can clean out the drain line temporarily with a wet – dry shop vacuum from outside where the drain line exits. (this is normally a PVC pipe sticking out of the ground near the outside unit) once clear everything should be back on and running. This is a good time to schedule a professional maintenance with A/C Care Heat & Air to clean and tune up your system.
